From Our Own Correspondent. Defence Rifle Club. On Saturday afternoon th© first shoot for the Parkes and Co. Cup was commenced between Pohangina and Ashhurst teams under trying conditions. A background of snow, with a strong bleak wind blowing off the snow-covered ranges, did not tend for good scoring and when the last men went down at the 300yds. range, driving rain and sleet commenced to fall and the shoot had to be decided on the one range only. The second shoot is to be held on the Ashhurst range next Saturday, when better conditions are hoped for to enable the extra shoot to be fired. The results so far are as_ follows— Ashhurst A: R. A. Jones 35, C. W. Turner 33, M. Hausmann 33, S. Mayhew 32, J. Searle 32; total 165. Ashhurst B: J. Henson 32, F. Booking 31, W. G. Romley 31, S. J. Brookie 30, K. Romley 26; total, 150. _ __ . Pohangina Valley: F. Short Montgomerie 32, J. Speiman 28, M. Fitzherbert 27, C. Gavin 26; total 145. Others who fired were: J. O Hagan ««*, T. Romley' 31, H. Russell 30. Xext Saturday the club will fire a shoot for Mr F. Dunstall’s trophy over the 500 and 600 yds. ranges, commencing at 12.30 p.m. sharp. On Thursday evening the Ashhurst Town naii was the venue of tho local I branch of the National Party’s grand ball, there being a large attendance irom ail the surrounding districts. The hall looked a picture with decorations of multi-col-oured balloons, streamers and coloured lighting effects, the wonderful array ot red and white japonica blossom and gaily coioui-ed evening aresses of the ladies. Congratulations are due to the committee and nelpers who combined to make tne evening such a success, japonica bios soms were used to great effect in the decoration of the supper-rooms, which were a credit to the committee and Mrs F. It. Thornley who had charge of all the decorations. Novelty’ nances were a fea- j lure of tne evening, tne winners being: j Miss B. Romley ana Mr E. Woods (Monte Carlo); Mrs Grammer and Mr G. Clapham. Social Evening.

On Saturday evening the local basketball girls were the guests of Mrs Tr - inewan at her residence, Bunnythorpe road, there being a large attendance of girls and their friends. The evening was spent in games, competitions and items. The winners of the games and competitions were Misses Youie and Story and Mr Cameron. Items were reendered by Mrs Cameron, Miss I. Woodroofe and Messrs B. Moar, M. Bailey and Master R. Groves (songs); Miss Mary Groves (recitation), and Miss Doris McKinleJ (tap dance). Community singing was led by Mrs Cameron. A chocolate competi tion was won by Mr J. Hill. On behalf of those present, Miss M. Woodroofe thanked Mrs Tremewan for the pleasant evening and for her hospitality.
