Pahiatua Fire Board
QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the Pahiatua Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Messrs. A. W. White (chairman), V. M. Edgar, K. Mason, W. A. Carthow, J. W. Sturton, Superintendent W. H. Lawry and tho secretary, Mr. L. D. Lovelock. The local fire brigade asked if the back of the fire station could be dug up and sown down in grass. It was pointed out that the Government were supplying labour free for work of this kind and all the Fire Board had to sanction was the materials for the job. Mr. Edgar moved that the work bo approver, and the seed necessary bo supplied.— Carried. The superintendent, Mr. W. H. Lowry, reported as follows: — Brigade: The brigade attended three practices and three meetings. Roll: The roll at present is two officers, 13 firemen and two messengers. There is a vacancy for one fireman. Rubbish fires: 30 permits to burn rubbish were issued during the quarter. Fire alarms: There were no fire calls during the quarter. Plant: In pursuance of the authority of the board granted at tho April meeting, the following plant has been ordered, viz., two branches at £2 2s Gd each, four nozzles at 17s 6d each. e
rack type hydrant authorised to bo purchased lias not been ordered as it hr.s boen ascertained that the cost of same is £ls against a doublo head standard hydrant at £lO 10s. I wish, however, to recommend the board to nutho.riso the purchase of the rach type hydrant. Recommendations. Neon signs: That the board make a recommendation to the Tararua Electric Power Hoard to make it a rule that all neon sign installation switches be placed in some accessible position so that such switches may be accessible in case of fire. Heater for station recreation rooms, etc.: That as no heating arrangements are provided in either the brigade meeting room or the caretaker's rooms, that a second-hand gas heater be purchased for a sum not exceeding £2 10s. Station practice ground: The ground at the rear of the station building is overgrown with weeds and in its present condition is of no benefit to the brigade and it would be dosirable to obtain authority to utilise No. 13 Schcmo workers to clear, dig and lovel and sow the ground down in grass. This work would employ two men for approximately one month and would provide a useful practice ground. Fire alarm system, trickle charger: That as tho proposed fire alarm circuits are to bo run on a battery system, I wish to recommend the board to purchase a trickle charger. Approximate cost £2 10s. General Remarks. Uniforms: In accordance with the board's recommendation to standardise the brigade uniforms, I intend to parade firemen with all uniform gear and to allocate new parts of uniforms where required. Such allocation to be within tho estimated cost for the year of £25. Mr. Edgar moved and Mr. Sturton seconded that the superintendent’s Tty port be adopted.—Carried. Mr. Fraser, of the Tararua Electric Power Board, waited on the board and reported that the installation of the now alarm system would cost approximately £IBO for the complete job of installing 36 alarm boxes; there would be altogether four and a-half miles of wire to complete the job and the system would carry a C-volt current. Mr. Edgar moved that the price submitted by the Power Board be accepted. —Carried.
The superintendent stated that Dr. Hugh Paterson has served six years as honorary doctor to the Fire Brigade, and had recently received a five years’ service medal; next year he will receive a bar, stated Mr. Lawry.
