Empire Teachers’ Exchange System

APOSTLES OF EDUCATION LONDON, May 28. Teachers who attended the annuai meeting of the Leaguo of tho Empire which controls the system of the interchange of teachers throughout the Empire, were told by Mr T. W. White Australian Minister of Trade and Customs, that they were the apostles and true missionaries of education in the Commonwealth of Nations. They bore an immense responsibility for what they put into the minds ot young people, said Mr White. No propaganda or jingoism was wanted, but practical patriotism, and the spirit that impelled people to take a risk iu times of national crisis. Dr. Bernard Allen, chairman of the Interchange Committee, who presided, welcomed tho interchange of teachers between the Dominions as well as between the Dominions and Britain. Four Australian teachers, he said, had been interchanged with members of the same profession in the Transvaal and Canada last year. Tho annual report stated that 17b teachers were exchanged in 1937, tho highest number since tho scheme had been inaugurated. Since 1919 no fewer than 3326 teachers had been exchanged. A position had no\v been reached when certain education authorities at home and abroad found it impracticable to increase further tho number of teachers under the scheme. Twelve New Zealanders left the Dominion on exchange in 1937. A speaker at tho annual meeting was Miss Olive Jones, who went to New Zealand under tho scheme last year.
