Commander A. G. Gerrand has been ippointed service manager of Union Airways. His headquarters will con ,inue to be Palmerston North. Mr. J. Linklater was re-elected chairnan of the Foxton Harbour Board at he annual meeting of that body yesterday. Mr. W. G. Beckett, special represeu tative for Columbia Pictures, is paying i visit to Palmerston North in connection with the screening of “I’ll Take Romance,” and is at the Commercial Hotel. Dr. Hubert Smith, Medical Officer of Health for Northampton County, Eng land, has been appointed Medical Officer of Health for Auckland. Prior to takintr up duty in August, he hopes to travel in Canada and the United States. Dr. R. M. S. Taylor, first assistant at the Wellington training school for den tal nurses, has been appointed superin teudent of dental services for the North Auckland, Taranaki and East Coast health districts, with headquarters at Hamilton. Dr. Malcolm Sargent, the eminent English conductor, is to leave London next week to fulfil an engagement extending over some months with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It is understood that he will not visit New Zealand this year. Mr. Stanley E. Smith, son oT Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Smith, of Onehunga, who has completed a three years' course in theology at Knox College, University of Toronto, has been aAvarded a scholarship as first student of the year, and a travelling fellowship, Avhich will enable him to continue his studies in Europe. Mr. K. Pullar, who has been relieving telegraph engineer at Palmerston North iu the absence of Mr. C. S. Plank, who suffered injuries iu a motor accident aud is now going to America, has been permanently appointed to the position. Mr. Pullar was formerly stationed at Christchurch. Condolence with the relatives of the
late Mr. S. Sanson, who was killed in the Cook street railway crossing last week, was expressed by the Mauawatu Rugby Union last night. The late Mr. Bauson was a stalwart of the Awahuri Club in the days when Awahuri was a force in Manawatu Rugby. In the examinations held in March, 1938, by the Electrical Wiremen’s Registration Board, Mr. D. G. Bimes, Palmerston North, secured a. pass in the written part, and Messrs. J. J. Baker, T. T. O’Brien, J. W. J. Osborne, A. ft. G. Pownall and A. R. Bpaekman, all of Palmerston North, passed in the practical part. Mr. D. N. McLeod, Dunedin, senior supervisor of tho mail branch of the Post Office, has bean announced by the Promotions Board as being tho successor to Mr. D. Dinnison, senior supervisor of the postal branch of the Pal merston North Post Office, whose transfer to a similar positiou in Auckland was recently announceu. After a few weeks in London a tour by motor-ca will be made through England and Scot land, where some time will be spent. 1 is likely that a tour of the Europeai capitals will bo made and a visit pau to the Norwegian fjords. In congratulating Mr. J. A. Nash oi his re-election as a member of the Fox ton Harbour Board at the auuual meet mg of the board yesterday, the chair man, Mr. J. Linklater, said he though the people of Palmerston North realisec tne great amount of work Mr. Nasi had done during the years he had re presented them. Replying, Mr. Nasi said he was the only surviving activ member of the original board.
