Feilding A. and P. Association

REVIEW OF FINANCES The committee of the Feilding A. and P. Association met on Friday evening, Mr. N. J. Short presiding. Mr. Short referred to the passing of Mrs. J. Waugh and a motion of sympathy with Mr. Waugh and family was carried. Reference was also made to the indispositions of Messrs. Hugh Burrell and H. J. Booth and best wishes for their speedy recovery were expressed. Mr. G. M. Moffitt (treasurer) review ed the finances as follows:

“Income.—Annual subscriptions plus interest credited from the life members' account amounts to £560, being only £S short of the previous year's receipts. General entry fees are £25 less, and the side show space, etc., is practically on a par with 1937. Donations show a decline, being £l9l 10s lid as compared with £240. Of this deficit of approximately £SO, £35 is traced to the Manawatu Jersey Club’s special donation for the 1937 Show, thus leaving our usual donations £ls short on last year. The takings at tho lawn and gates are £8 more than for the previous Show, and this is considered satisfactory in view of the increased membership. The ram fair again contributed a large proportion of the revenue, a profit of £IS6 being made, which is only £4 short of last year's figures. Farm account: This year's profit is £SO less than in 1937 when better prices were being realised for farm produce. The weight judging competitions were very well supported, an increase being shown in this section, but the pony raffle realised only £55 as compared with £72 last year. However, this is still a very paying proposition, a total profit of £BS 11s resulting as against £96 19s in 1937. Various small accounts returned £9 Iss 4d profit, an increase of £4. This is the first year for the past 26 years that we have not paid any bank interest. Our life members' reserve credit account has offset the overdraft in the general account throughout the year. The balance-sheet shows £l3 interest, but this is an adjustment made for interest the life members' fund would have earned if invested independently, and the £l3 was credited to the members' subscription account, which is the usual procedure. Last year £6 14s 6d was paid in bank interest. Prize money paid out was £777 8s lOd, being £ls less thau the 1937 figures. Tho show day wages and expenses account was £320 7s 4d in 1938, and £285 6s Sd last year, an increase of £35. Catering was £8 more, due mainly to the increase in charges; judges' hotel accommodation and travelling expenses were £7 more; gatemen's wages £3 increase, home industry, etc., erections £9 extra. Caretaker's and other workers' wages were £9 more. Many small savings have been affected and the account is only £35 more than the 1937 balance-sheet.

“£ll3 5s 2d was expended in new work during the year. The grounds and buildings have received attention and £ll9 expended on maintenance. The usual 5 per cent, depreciation, amounting to £l4l 9s, has been written off and the financial year closes with a net profit of £75 19s 4d. Last year's profit was £328 17s 4d, but over £IOO extra has been expended in necessary maintenance, and the total receipts for the period are £136 Jess, whilst the total expenditure is £1.17 more.

“The balance-sheet shows tho association to be in a sound financial position. The small bank overdraft of £47 was wiped out, and the account finished up with a credit balance of £l7 7s lOd, in the general account. The life members' reserve increased by five new members and now stands at £290 credit. Sundry amounts outstanding and included in the various accounts amount to £132, but this is considered recoverable. The farm is stocked for the coning season, and £165 has been paid in this direction. The total assets amount to £6137 12s sd, and liabilities are practically nil. ” The report was received, members expressing satisfaction regarding the state of the finances. Farm Report. Mr. H. D. Brewster (chairman), on behalf of the farm and ground committees reported: “The farm has had a successful year, taking into consideration the lower values ruling for wool, lambs, and cast ewes. Besides the usual maintenance work a considerable amount of improvements was carried out.” Messrs. H. J. Lancaster and D. \V. Reid, mover and seconder of the motion that the report be received, expressed congratulations to Mr. Brewster for the amount of work he as manager had done on behalf of the association. Show Days. Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick said that he had been asked by the Chamber of Commerce to suggest to the association that its show days be Friday and Saturday, instead of Wednesday and Thursday, as in the past. Mr. S. McDowall said that there was an urgent need for a hall for the displays of arts and crafts at the show. He pointed out that it was impossible to show the exhibits to the best advantage in the building in which the sections were housed. Air. McDowall also suggested that if a hall of a suitable type was provided it would be possible to secure trade displays. Air. Brewster suggested that exhibitors be asked to have stock ready for the grand parade at 1.40 p.m. He pointed out that the parade was timed to take place at 2 p.m., but it was usually later before it eventuated. Air. D. W. Reid suggested that trotting events be conducted on one afternoon of tho show. He contended that the events at the last show had attracted a good number of patrons. General. The Cheltenham Dairy Co., Ltd., wrote donating £3 3s, the prize money won by the company at the recent show. —lt was decided to send a letter to tho company expressing the association’s thanks. Tho N.Z. Road Transport Alliance (Alanawatu branch) wrote complaining regarding the lack of loading facilities

on the showgrounds and asking that a sub-committee be permitted to meet its committee to discuss matters.—Referred to the ground committee. Arising out of a letter from the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association asking for support in their approach to the Aleat Board to establish a super-grade for export lambs and payment of a premium for same, it was finally decided to take no action. It was decided to write thanking judges who had given their services without charging their expenses. Alessrs. F. G. Ellis and G. Al. Whitelock wrote thanking the association for letters of sympathy. It was decided that the Aleat Board be thanked for its deliberations in respect of recommendations made by the association in respect of the rules of the district lamb competition. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. F. W. Gorton and members at present in Sydney. The secretary (Miss U. Alillar) intimated that the following officers retire next month and are eligible for re-elec-tion: President, Air. N. J. Short; vicepresidents, Hon. J. G. Cobbe and Messrs. T. Collins, A. Kidd and W. G. Booth; honorary treasurer, Air. G. Al. Aloffitt; committeemen, Alessrs. J. G. Eliott, J. Knight, R. Linklatcr, R. Richardson, D. W. Reid, K. Whisko . It. Younger; town members, Messrs. A. O. Buist, G. J. Fitzpatrick, P. G. Stevens, H. Smithers, S. McDowall, C. B. AlcClure.
