KEEN COMPETITION From Our Own CorresDondent WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Store iambs made a sharp i"se of up to 2/- a head at Waipukurau to-day when several good quality pens weie offered. The market was topped by a line of Romney-cross wether Umbs on account of Miss S. I. White, Sherwood, at 19/1. Shorn Romney-cross ewe lambs, on account of Mr H. V. Hill, Mangorapa, made the fine value of 24/3. An attractive line of mixed-aged ewes realised the high figure of 33/-. All entries met with keen competition and the selling throughout was brisk and firm, FAT SHEEP. On account of Mr Eric McLeod, ol Wilder Settlement, 175 medium-grown, well-woolled Romney-cross wether lambs, six weeks on chow moullier, in very forward order and bright, sold at 19/-. An entry of heavy, prime, late-shorn ewes sold at 19/9. In from Porangahau, 51 ewes in freezing order brought 14/9. In from Argyle, 21 medium-grown, prime, Down-cros3 two-tooths, quality young mutton, sold at 19/8. On account of Mr Eric McLeod, 62 ewes in light to medium order sold at 15/-. From the same source an entry of medium-grown, Down-cross lambs, in light prime order, sold at 18/4. STORE SHEEP. On account of Mr L. E. Wakelan, Mangaorapa, 159 well-woolied, mediumgrown, Romney-cross wether lambs, in forward condition, bright and healthy, were a good straight line to sell at 18/6.
On account of Mr H. V. Hill, Mangaorapa, 176 early-shorn, nicely-grown Romney-cross ewe lambs, in bright, healthy condition, attractive young sheep, met the market with keen bidding to sell at 24/3. Bred in the Woodville district, 172 mixed-aged, well-framed ewes, two to four-year, including three five-year (r.w. Romney), sold at 33/-. These ewes were in exceptional order, having been well done anil carrying a good slipe. On account of Mr H. V. Hill, the Romney-cross wether lambs out of his draft, shorn and well grown, a splendid wintering line, sold at 18/-. On account of Mr G. L. Jamieson, Kereru, 122 two and four-tooth wethers, quite well framed and in forward condition, brought 23/7. On account of Mr C. Severinson, Makaretu, 135 well-woolled medium Romney-cross ewe lambs, in healthy and sound condition, realised 25/1. An entry of 104 two and four-tooth ewes, medium-framed and in good order (r.w. Romney), met the market at 27/10. On account of Tourers Station, 135 small to medium-grown Down-cross lambs in light condition were passed at 13 1 /-. On account of Miss White. Sherwood, a line of extra well-grown shorn Romr ey-cross wether lambs, in forward condition, hardy and bright, topped the market at 19/1 CONFIDENT MARKET BETTER PRICES FOR STORE CATTLW WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. A feature at to-day’s offering at Wui pukurau was the improvement in tht market for store cattle after severs, weeks of depressing and lifeless sales To-day’s selling showed a bright tone, in which much better competition was shown for all lines penned. The yarding included some useful 20-month steers, which realised £7 5/-, being 7/6 to 10/a head better than late rates. The first of the new season’s weaner steers was offered when a mediumgrown line, well-coated, brought £4 10/-. Several lines of aged empty cows, in very poor condition, which have been practically unsaleable, sold to £4 7/-. No grown bullocks or any early chilling sorts were yarded. The selling ihroughout indicated a return of confidence in the market, Jersey sorts made Up most of the fat pens, and the best heifers brought £7, averaging 26/- per lOOlbs. FAT CATTLE. A single, extra-prime, crossbred heifer, which would hang lip at 7001b5., realised £9. A small-grown young Red Poll cow in billable order sold at £4 5/-. A medium-grown prime Jersey-cross heifer, which should kill at 4751b5., brought £5. An extra-prime medium-grown solidly finished A.A. heifer, showing splendid quality and would hang up at 6001b5., sold at £9 12/6. An extra-prime medium-grown Jer-sey-cross heifer, which should kill at 5251b5., brought £7. STORE CATTLE. An offering of 43 aged, horned, crossbred bleeding cows, in poor and hard condition, r.w. A.A. bull, brought all they were worth at £4 8/-. A line of 18 dehorned mixed-bred three-off small to medium-grown steers in good store order, were passed at £8 5/-. An entry of 38 medium-grown cleanbred 20-mths A.A. steers, in hardy, good-doing order and showing good coats, sold quite well at £7 5/-. A line of 18 empty dehorned mixedbred cows, in very poor condition, made a good sale £4 7/-. In their condition these cows are not likely to winter well. A entry of 20 small-grown norrawframe A.A. steers, in backward order, sold at £6 8/6. A line of 30-month A.A. steers, including a few badly bred sorts and in good store order, brought £3.
