Unusual Sea Visitors
TUNAS CAUGHT BY FISHERMEN From Our Own Con esDOndent. HASTINGS, Last Night. Two tunas were caught in Hawke’s Bsy on Sunday by Hastings fishermen, the catch being a most unusual one for this coast, and rare indeed in New Zealand at all. A further coincidence in connection with the catch is that both were hooked on a different spinner at the same time, and landed almost together.
The lucky fishermen were Mr Gordon Walker and Mr L. Bone, both of Hastings, who were fishing about 20 miles out in the bay. The men were operating spinners on hand gear for kingfish, and at first thought that their strike was kingfish. The tuna is similar In weight, and puts up a strong fight lik*» a kingfish. The fish were about 30 inches long, atlhough one species of tuna caught in American waters attains weights of over 1000 pounds. Very few tuna have been caught in New Zealand water-3, the majority having been much further north, near Russell. It is thought that they arrive in New Zealand from American waters, following the drifts of intermittent warm currents, but are by no means common visitors these shores.
