Dr. and Mrs. T. Gilray, Napier, will embark on the Kangitata for an extended trip abroad. Dr. F. J. Turner, of the Geology Department of the University of Otago, has been awarded a Sterling Research Fellowship at Yale University.

Rev. Father E. Joyce returned to New Zealand on Monday after two years in the diocese of Toowoomba, Queensland. He will be stationed at Christchurch.

A resolution of condolence with Mr. J. Boyce in the death* of his daughter-in-law was carried by the Manawatu provincial executive of the Farmers' Union yesterday. Mr. Fitzhugh Green, a prominent American author, and Mrs. Green, who have been on a fishing holiday at Taupo, left by the Monterey on Monday on their way to New York.

Sir Robert Turing, Bart., of Chichester, England, is a passenger by the Empire Star, due at Auckland on April 11. Sir Robert served in the‘Great War as a captain in the Rifle Brigade. His Grace, the Archbishop of Bris bane, will preach in All Saints’ Church at evensong on May 8. From May 9 to 14 the Archbishop will conduct a Retreat for clergy at Nga Tawa School, when the Bishop, vicars and assistant curates of the Wellington Diocese will attend.

Rev. Fathers G. Nicolas, S.M., and F. Odennino, S.M., of Fiji, were through passengers on the Niagara which arrived at Auckland on Monday. Father Nicolas, Avho is a nephew of Bishop Nicolas, of Suva, has been in Fiji for li> years and is going from Australia to France for a holiday. Father Odennino will enter his second novitiate at Sydney.

Major-General S. B. Pope, C. 8., D. 5.0., formerly commander of the Waziristan district of the North-west Frontier of India, arrived at Wellington this week by the Awatea, on leave. From 1931 to 1934 Major-General Pop.* was in charge of what is perhaps the most turbulent and unsettled portion of the British Empire, where guerilla warfare continues more or less constantly. Since. 1934 Major-General Pope has been administrative officer and Quartermaster-General of the Southern Command in India. He is colonel of the 4/19th Hyderabad Regiment of the 5/13th Frontier Rifles, and has commanded the Bannu Brigade and the Razmak Brigade, important units of the Indian Army. Accompanied by Mrs. Pope, the Major-General is making a world tour. He has already visited I Ceylon, Singapore, Java and Australia, and after a fortnight in New Zealand will proceed to England by way of Honolulu and North America.
