NOMINATIONS FOR MANCHESTER STREET AND LYTTON STREET The following nominations have been received for the two primary school committees in Feilding, to be elected next Wednesday night (an asterisk denotes sitting member): — Lytton Street School: * J. McKenzie, W. A. Salt. LYTTON STREET SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the Lytton Street School Committee was held at the school last night, Mr. C. Y. Jewell (chairman) presiding. Also present were Messrs G. Wilkinson, C. V. Guy, F. P. Fawcett, W. H. Smith (headmaster), J. C. Christian and Mesdames T. Donaldson and E. Scott. Correspondence was received from the Wanganui Education Board on the subject of ground improvements, stating that the Public Works Department would be considering an estimate of the work required to be done, and also that the matter of top-dressing would also be attended to by that department. The Education Board wrote approving of a grant of £4O for the top-dressing of the drill area.
The chairman stated that the work was well in hand.
With regard to tho transport of children from Makino road, the Education Department advised that the committee’s representations on the subject were being considered. The headmaster, in his monthly report, stated that the school roll stood at 349, with a good average attendance. There was still a fair amount of sickness among the children, but situation was generally satisfactory. Mr. F. Thomas had completed his services with the school on March 31, and Mr. H. Bowater had been acting as a relieving assistant, and would be replaced by Mr. B. Dawes, of Castlecliff, on May 23. At the annual primary school sports the school had retained the McCorkindale Rose Bowl aud had won the Guthrie Shield, but had lost at the Sandon sports the McKelvie Shield. Thanks were due to Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins and Miss Gosnell who had taken charge of the children at the Sandon sports. Ten plots were presented for judging in the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club competitions, and all were the subject of very favourable comment. Concluding, Mr. Smith expressed appreciation of tho valuable work of the committee, stating that the school was fortunate in having such a capable and enthusiastic body of men and women who were prepared to devote so much time and energy to further the interests of the children. In receiving the report, the chairman reciprocated the kind expression of the headmaster, remarking that the relations between the committee and the school staff had always been most har- j monious.
