Fanners’ Union Business
QUESTION OF ADMISSION OF PRESo “That all union meetings be conducted in committee, and that only a brief summary of the proceedings be handed to the Press,” was a remit moved at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union by Mr. G. J. Wilde on behalf of the Opiki branch. Mr. Wilde said that opponents of proposals that the Farmers’ Union was sponsoring were apt to seize on Information and use it for their own ends. Further, there was the possibility of a wrong construction being placed on speakers’ remarks. The chairman (Mr. H. J. McLeavey) said the executive could always go into committee when it did not want anything published, while the reporters also observed any requests made by individual speakers not to publish their remarks. The union only had itself to blame for anything that was published detrimental to its interests. It would be no use the executive passing the remit unless other executives of the Farmers’ Union took similar action. By eight votes to five, it was decided to suggest to the inter-provincial conference that it should consider the matter.
