Beach Improvements

FOXTON SOCIETY’S REQUEST. A letter from the Foxton Beach improvement Society was received by the Foxton Harbour Board at the meeting on Tuesday, requesting the board to ask all its leaseholders to clear lupin and other noxious growths from their sections; (2) to remove all broken glasp and rubbish from the eastern end ol the river beach as it was considered that these constituted a menace to pedestrians and a danger to cars using this portion of the beach; (3) that all roads be cleaned up at the resort and named; (4) that three conveniences at the resort be given immediate attention in the interests of public health; (5) that the pipes for Frog Alley be laid without delay in order to overcome the surface water nuisance during the winter months; (6) that two or three men be employed on full lime at the beach to do this work; (7) that the camping areas be enclosed; (8) that the 10 per cent, camp site collection fees be paid out of the fees actually paid into the board. In conclusion, the secretary (Mr. A. D. Macpherson) asked the board to give favourable and immediate consideration to the requests, as it was generally considered that tho beach was “going back.” Mr. E. W. Carthew (Feilding): What is meant by that? Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston North): That we as a board are slipping in the care of the beach. We have got a lot to thank the Beach Improvement Society for. They have done wonderful work. We know their funds are limited, but so are ours. These requests require looking into, however, and I will move that they be referred to the local committee to investigate and bring down a report at our next meeting. While the committee is on the job I also suggest that it considers the whole question of the camping charges. It is hardly fair that the Improvement Society should have to work to raise the money to provide all the facilities for campers at the beach.

Mr. M. E. Perreau seconded the resolution and, in doing so, said that he understood that a deputation was to wait on the board in support of the letter. It was the duty of the board to realise to the full the great assistance the society was. No doubt the resolution, however, would fill the bill.

Mr. Osborne referred to the recent disturbance at the resort which had resulted in police action. He expressed the opinion that there should be more adequate and constant police supervision there during holiday periods. The chairman (Mr. J. Linklater) endorsed Mr. Osborne’s remarks.

The resolution was carried, and it was also decided to write to the Police Department urging closer supervision at Manawatu Heads during holiday periods.
