Poppy Day
Mr B. J. Jacobs, president of the R.S.A., writes: —Poppy Day, as the annual apj)eal of the Returned .Soldiers' Association, is so well established as an institution that it requires no explanation. The contribution asked is sufficiently small as to be within the means of practically every member of the community. In spite of this small subscription the association is justly proud of the aggregate of benefit that it has been able to dispense. We are, however, not unmindful of the fact that apart from the sentiment of the poppy, this excellent result is due to two main elements. First, there has been the unfailing response to our appeal from the general public; and, secondly, the wonderful work of tnose energetic and loyal ladies who through the years have toiled unremittingly to ensure success on each annual occasion. It is my privilege on behalf of the association to express our grateful thanks to the public and particularly to our lady helpers. May 1, sir, through your valuable columns ask our public this year on Friday, the Bth iust., to continue their active support to the fund and to assist our lady helpers to make their voluntary task a lighter one. In conclusion, I desire to state specifically that absolutely not a penny of the funds is utilised other than for the alleviation of distress and unemployment.
