Shoes of Celebrities
A former shoemaker and teacher at I the Shoemakers’ Apprentice School, Ludwig Schmid, is at present showing a highly interesting collection of shoes and boots which were made for prominent Austrian personalities. There are, for example, the richly decorated shoes which the Empress Elisabeth of Austria used to wear. In a separate glass case are preserved the slippers which the Emperor Francis Joseph wore at the time of his death in 1916. An important exhibit are the shoes of the famous dancer, Fanny Elssler. They are the smallest shoes in the whole collection. There are a pair of Wellington boots which the Archduke Johann Salvator, better known as Johann Orth, used to wear before his departure on that fatal sea voyage, from which he never returned. One can also see the first hunting boots of the young Emperor Francis Joseph, UlO bottom part made of black calf leather, the top part from thick felt. There are also the shoes of Princess Pauline Aletternich among the exhibits, especially interesting being the pair which she wore at her wedding.
