Win For Joe Louis

Opponent Collapses In Centre of Ring TERRIFIC PUNISHMENT United Praes Association—By Electric Telerraph.— Copyright. Received Sunday, 7.20 pjm. CHICAGO, April I. After fighting courageously Harry Thomas collapsed in the centre of the ring in the fifth round of the title bout with Joe Louis. The fight started slowly, Thomas being the first to make the pace when he connected with several Bhort rights to the negro’s jaw. He won the second round, but in the third the champion woke up. He stunned Thomas with & terrific right to the jaw and in the fourth, fighting like an automaton, he dropped Thomas twice with terrific punches, the first time for a count of nine. Thomas landed a superb right to Louis’ head, but he was dropped for a count of three with a left hook. Thomas, who was glassy-eyed, came up swinging his fists, but he was again dropped for a count of nine. He returned gamely, but Louis, whose blows were connecting repeatedly, subjected him to a terrific series of left hooks, and the end came when Louis landed a smashing blow to the side of Thomas’ head. The stadium was half full, the receipts amounting to 45,600 dollars, a new modern low level for a championship fight. Louis weighed 13st. 101 b. and Thomas 14st.
