Feilding s Water Supply
EXCESSIVE DRAW-OFF GIVES CONCERN The excessive draw-off on Feilding’s water supply is giving the Bo rough Council some cause for concern, and it is likely that further action will have to be taken to reduce consumption. Last week it was reported that the levels at the reservoirs were steadily falling, indicating that the consumption was exceeding the inflow from the intake, and it was decided to reimpose the restrictions governing the use of garden hoses. So far this has had no material effect on the situation. Normally the draw-off during the hours of daylight is more than made up during the night, but this month the experience has been the other way with the result that the levels at the reservoirs are steadily falling because the inflow, which is normal, is not overtaking the excessive drawoff. Unless water users are prepared to co-operate with the borough officials in the direction of meeting the situation they will be faced with a period of very discoloured water in the event of heavy rain and the river becoming fresh since there is not sufficient water in the reservoirs to steady rhe influence of flood waters. With fuE reservoirs it is possible to obviate the- discoloured waters arising from a fit od in the river, but while they are so low this trouble cannot be escaped. The borough engineer (Mr. T. K. Hay) stated yesterday that the position was being closely watched, but the circumstances called for further restrictions on the use of hoses mnd the checking of all waste.
