Coup Unpreventable
FORCE THE ONLY WAY (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 14. The Prime Minister said in the House of Commons that members might desire that he should state the British position regarding Austria. Britain was under no commitment to Austria to tako action, but was pledged to consultation with France and Italy in the event of action being taken affecting Austrian independence and integrity. This pledge was fully discharged to bGth the French and Italian Governments.
As a result, he said, France and Britain had addressed a similar protest to Germany upon the action it had taken. From Italy they had received a full exposition of its attitude, but it had been defined with great precision in a statement the Italian Government had published in the Press. Regarding the defence programme, Mr. Chamberlain said that the hard fact was that nothing could have arrested the action of Germany unless other nations had been prepared to use force to prevent it. These events were bound to have an effect which, could not yet be measured. The immediate result must be to intensify the sense of uncertainty and insecurity In Europe.
