Hockey in Feilding

SWIFTS CLUB MEETING The annual meeting of the Swifts Hockey Club, Feilding, was held o:i Monday night, when the following au nual report was received:— The club’s financial position for the past year shows a considerable improvement, and the club has now a few pounds in hand in spite of very heavy expenditure. In the eleven-a-side competition considerable all-round improvement was shown by all second-year players and the new members soon showed that practice and a desire ; o learn could mako up for iack of experience. The eyes of tile ox>pusing clubs were opened to the fact that, although we are a young club, wo are X>otential winners. In the oleveu-a-side competition two teams of even strengtn were selected by the selection committee, and this policy x>roved to be a very x>ox>ular one. Tho sealed handicap competition was won by tho Swifts Hockey Club’s A team.

In the tournaments the x>olicy of one strong and three even teams was adoxKod. This proved to bo a very successful policy and, although none ol the teams won cux>s or medals, they all acquitted themselves well. Several members of tho club gaiued representative honours in the junior representative team which played at Hawera.

The club fixed the subscription for the 1937 season at 10s, comx>rising a membership fee of Is and a levy ox 9s. Aithougu this subscrijition seemed rather nigh, it was necessary in view of the state of the club’s finances. .The members have paid their subscnxitious very well, although there are still some subscriptions outstanding.

Donations were received from Messrs. P. G. Guy, D. Cochrane, A. J. HumXiliroys, F. Gaze, J. A. Lamberton, W. F. Garder and ±\ P. Fawcett, and the club is very grateful to these gentlemen for their xiractical lielx>. The club has uow r paid tho balance owing on the jerseys in 1930. The club wishes to thank Messrs. Humphreys and Andrews, Ltd., for the very considerate manner in wnich this firm has treated tho club in eonnectiou with the purchase of these jerseys. The club was successful in obtaining a delegate to the executive in the Xierson of Air. P. G. Guy, and thanks aro due to Mr. Guy for the wholehearted manner in which he worked for tho interests of the club. The club wishes to record its appreciation of the work dono by tho club caxitain, Mr. Ron. Eade, and also ot tho helxi, monetary and otherwise, given by several of its vice-presidents. Tho club compliments the executive on the xirogressivo nature of its policy during the pas! year. The improvements in the grounds at Victoria Park in an economical and thorough mannel is a decided stex> forward lor hockey in the Feilding district. The policy of inviting international and represetative teams to play in Feilding also receives the approbation of the club.

The club wishes to record its appreciation of Air. D. Cochrane’s services in helping to train the teams during the 1937 season, and hopes that during the forthcoming season it will be able to obtain his valuable services again. The death of Leo Trevena came as a great shock to the members of the club. He was a keen and promising junior player and was captain of one of the club’s junior teams. The mother of a very j>opular member of the club, Mr. L. Duncan, died recently, and the club wishes to extend the sympathy of its members to Lance, his father, brothers and sisters in their bereavement.

It was decided to hold over ihe election of officers until a subsequen: meeting.
