DANGEROUS DRIVING CHARGE Arising out of an accident on the Eketahuna-Nireaha road recently, Thomas Den bee was charged in the Eketahuna Court on Friday with driving on the Eketahuna-Nireaha road at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public. Constable McCowan stated that when the accident occurred the car ran off the road and capsized. Evidence was given by Miss I. Spring and Miss V. Edge, two well-known hockey players, who were passengers in the car. D. D. Ryan stated he was on the scene shortly after the accident and described the result of the accident. To Mr. Parsons: A good driver would probably have regained command of the car after the first skid. Personally, he could drive them at 50 miles an hour with safety. W. G. Macky described the road. Ho would not drive in excess of 30 miles at the top of the hill on account of poor visibility. Constable McCowan gave evidence of being on the scene the next morning, when he had tested the road at up to 55 miles per hour. He described the accident. Circumstances pointed to speed and recklessness. Thomas Denbee gave evidence that he was driving at 45 miles an hour. Going down the hill, he struck a big pot-hole, which lifted the car into the loose metal. He put on the brakes. The wheels seemed to lock and a big skid commenced. For not having a driver’s license a fine of 10s and 10s costs was imposed. On the other charge the Magistrate said he must take it that the car was going at too great a speed. He would be convicted and fined £2, with costs. The license would be cancelled for three months. B. 'White was charged with driving a car without a driver’s liceense. Constable McCowan said the prosecution was the result of a collision at Hamua. A fine of £1 and costs 12s was imposed. Lionel Cook was charged with driving a lorry without a driver’s license. Constable McCowan stated he had run off the road at Hukanui and had collided with and broken an electric lighting pole. Fined £1 and costs.
