Feilding Football Club
ANNUAL REPORT The following is a copy of the annual report of the Feilding Football Club:— “The 1937 season opened well for the Feilding Football Club. Instead of two teams as in the previous year, only one senior team Avas fielded. This team was stronger than any senior team fielded by the “yellow's” for many years, and during the season suffered only four defeats, these being by narrow margins. It Avould seem as if the enthusiastic coaching of the third grade over the past three or four years is now beginning to bear fruit and that the senior team is now reaching the highest standdards. This Avas particularly noticeable as the season progressed, and the club can now after several lean years boast of teams which play Avith real toamspirit. Before the commencement of competition games, friendly games AA'ere played Avith Dannevirke Old Boys and with Levin Athletic, both of which resulted in wins for Feilding. During the season also our thirds rccei\ r ed a visit from Kaierau, of Wanganui. In the Manawatu Rugby Union’s competitions the seniors played 11 games, won 5, drew 2 and lost 4, to finish fourth in the championship. The thirds continued the improvement shown in previous seasons, and although weakened by the loss of several players, one being promoted to senior and several leaving the district, still proved themselves Avorthy opponents for any team, and finished third on the championship table. Their record Avas, played 14, won 8, and lost 6. The success of the teams was very largely due to the coaching of Mr. W. Gleeson of the seniors, and of Mr. S. Benge. The club desires to express appreciation of these valued services. It is gratifying to note that the folloAving players gained representative honours in their respective grades: Messrs M. Waldin. W. Sullivan, O. Newman, R. Kitchen and J. Nichol in the Manawatu A, R. Bow'yer and J. McKenzie in the Manawatu B, and Wells, Beatson, Mitchell and Wealleans in the third grade. The club’s financial position Is sound and shows a credit balance. During the winter a queen carnival was held, and members of our club put a great deal of Avork in on behalf of the Feilding Football Executive Queen, and players are therefore looking forward to having many improvements effected in the gymnasium this season. It is with very deep regret that Ave have to record the passing of a playing member of our Feilding Old Boys; Ave refer to the late Mr. N. Knyvett Avbo was as well known and liked by the Feilding Club as he was by his own team. The club desires to express its deepest sympathy with his mother aud family. Already this year se\ r eral new players have stated their intention of joining the club, and these, along Avith the old stalwarts who are still available, augur very well for a successful season. In conclusion, the thanks and appreciation of club members and the committee are extended to those who donated funds and equipment, to those aa'lio lent cars for transport of players, the coaches, the members of tho St. John Ambulance Corps, and the Press. ”
