Improving City’s Gas Reticulation
PROPOSAL FOR NEW MAIN A suggestion by the gas manager (Mr. J. Lcarmonth) that the council should purchase and lay 180 chains of eight-inch main in Featherstone street from Ruahine street to Pascal street, was referred by the City Council last night to the incoming council for favourabe consideration. Mr. Learmonth’s estimate of the cost was £4899 10s. In his report he stated: “The four-inch main which is replaced by the eight-inch main is a fair charge against the depreciation fund, and as the four-inch main would cost £1782, this sum would be recoverable in this way. In addition, there is a prospect that the wages cost of laying tho new main would be subsidised by the Department of Labour. It is understood that the department desires to obtain avenues of employment for the winter, and as this work would absorb 12 men for 20 weeks, it should be possible to obtain a subsidy which would reduce the labour cost by £IOOO, making a total of £2117 to cover the cost of this work. #<< This extension would do for many years to come in that district. There is at present an eight-inch main in Ward Street, Grey street to Victoria avenue and connected on to the eight-inch main in Main street. At Ward street tho eight-inch is connected on to the four-inch, so by bringing the eight-inch along Featherstone street and connecting on to the eight-inch in Ward street will take in a very large area with the trunk main. This month the main layers have been washing out two-inch and 14-inch pipes and some of the consumers have not 4-inch pressure at the meter. In Church street the 14-inch pipes are full up with rust.”
