Foxton

From Our Own Correspondent. Work at Ohakea Aerodrome.

The secretary of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce has received the following telegram in reply from die Minister of Labour (Hon. H. T. Armstrong): “Am conferring with Hon. Minister of Public Works regarding the possibility of employing some of Foxton’s unemployed on the aerodrome works at Ohakea.’’ Herrington Golf Club.

The official opening of the 1938 season of the Herrington Coif Club will take place on Saturday, March 19. Play during the afternoon will take the form of a mixed foursome over a nine-hole course and will commence at 1.30 p.m. sharp. Methodist Ladies’ Guild.

The monthly meeting of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild took the form of a garden party at the residence of Mrs W. E. Bullard, of Avenue road, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent by all present. Competitions were won by Mrs J. F. Riches, Mrs L. J. Chittenden, and the Rev. R. Grice, and a bring and buy stall did brisk business. Afternoon tea was served under the trees, after which the Rev. Grice expressed the thanks of the Guild to Mr and Mrs Bullard. Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild.

The monthly social gathering of the Presbyterian Guild took the form of a pantry evening in honour of Miss W. Ebbett, whose marriage to Mr B. J. Reader takes place in the near future. Games and competitions interspersed with items, pleasantly whiled away the hours, the winners of the competitions being Mrs Gilmore, Mrs Pratt, Miss T. Pratt and Mrs J. M. Thomson. Appreciated items were elocutionary numbers by Mrs W. Hussey, of Raetihi, and vocal solos by Misses J. Barron and U. Thomson. At a suitable juncture, Mr J. Ross called on Miss Ebbett and Mr Reader to accept the handsome array of gifts from those present. Mr Reader thanked the donors, and musical honours were accorded the guests of the evening. Supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames J. Ross. E. Titcombe, C. McEwen and J. Symon. Personal. Mrs W. Hussey, of Raetihi, is the guest of Mr and Mrs H. Hussey, of Coley street. Miss I. Sutherland, District Nurse, who has been transferred to Feilding, has left Foxton. Her position has been filled by Nurse M. R. Little. Foxton District High School Committee The monthly meeting of the Foxton District High School committee was presided over by Mr W. R. McKenzie. Also present were Messrs L. Fletcher, H. Pod* more, E. Titcombe, S. E.Cowlc.v, M. E. Perreau and the secretary (Mr 1. W. Mudford), and the headmaster (Mr T. Kane). Owing to Mr Thomas’s departure from Foxton, the committee granted him leave of absence until the end of the present term, and it was decided to place on record the committee's appreciation ol the services rendered by Mr Thomas in connection with the local school.. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to the Foxton Borough Council for its generosity in placing the Municipal Baths at the disposal of the school to enable the children to be taught to swim. Acting on a suggestion put forward by the headmaster, the committee decided to set aside LI for prizes for competitions in connection with the school agricultural plots. Messrs L. Fletcher and H. Podmore wore appointed visitors for the month.
