Young Farmers’ Clubs

MEETING OF DISTRICT COMMITTEE. Tho Manawatu district committee of the Young Farmers' Clubs met in Palmerston North yesterday afternoon, Mr H. J. Lancaster presiding over an attendance of 26. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to the representatives of three new clubs—Pohangina, Colyton and Bunny tho rpe. A letter from Mr C. M. Whatman, leader of the young farmers' team at present in Australia, advised that the trip so far had been strenuous but enjoyable. The South Australian people had left no stone unturned to make the trip a success. The team was proving a happy family. The secretary (Mr A. J. Galpin) reported that 65 lecturers would be available for the coining season. The meeting accorded tho Department of Agriculture a hearty vote of thanks for its efforts in this connection.

Proposals for an inter-club debating competition were discussed, and it was suggested that eventually radio debates between the two Islands could be arranged. The idea was generally approved, and a committee, consisting of Messrs G. S. Robinson, E. W. Barnett. F. Sherwood and Anderson, was set up to formulate plans. Messrs K. Mitchell, J. B. Chrystal, F. W. Barnett and J. Linklater were appointed a committee to go into the matter of inter-club shearing competitions, leading eventually, it was suggested, to a Dominion championship. Proposals for an educational tour of the North Island, covering 1100 miles, were brought down by the secretary. -The cost per member would be about £5. The itinerary he suggested was as follow: —May 17, buses leave Wellington 6.30 a.m., pick up members as far as Palmerston North, leave Palmerston North 12 noon, arrive Hastings 4.0 U p.m.; May 18. Hastings and district all day; May 19, leave Hastings 9 a.in., arrive Wairoa 4 p.m.; May 20, leave Wairoa 1.30 p.m., arrive Gisborne 4.30 p.m.; May 21, Gisborne and district; May 22, leave Qisborue 12 noon, arrive Whakatane 5 p.m.; May 23, leave Whakatane 9 a.m., arrive Tauranga 5 p.m.; May 24, leave Tauranga 2.30 p.m., arrive Rotorua 4.30 p.m.; May 25, Rotorua all day; May 26, leave Rotorua 9 a.m., arrive Chateau 5 p.m.; May 27, Chateau all day; May 28, leave Chateau 8 a.m., return Palmerston North 5 p.m., buses return Wellington.

The meeting approved the idea, but agreed that tho itinerary should bo altered to provide an extra day at Rotorua. A committee consisting of Messrs Mitchell, Barnett, Linklatcr, Chrystal aud J. 1\ Gloyn, with departmental representatives, was set up to finalise the plans.

In connection with the forthcoming Manawatu Winter Show, it was decided lo stage an agricultural exhibit and to endeavour to arrange for sheepdog trials and seven a side football between club members.
