New Bishop of Waiapu
PROCEEDINGS IN CAMERA From Our Own Correspondent. NAPIER, Feb. 25. At a special session of Synod, io i held in camera on May 4, a new bishc, will be nominated to succeed the lav Ht. Rev. H. W. Williams in charge o the Diocese of Waiapu. The Rev. E. M Cowie, vicar of Khandallah, Wellington, has been chosen as commissary to preside. In accordance with an amended Church canon, no public announcement will be made until the name selected by Synod has been submitted first tv, the Archbishop, then to the Bench ol Bishops and finally to the standing committees of all the dioceses of Nev Zealand. The Waiapu election will Lc the first conducted under the provision. l of the new canon.
It is considered in well-teformec circles that an election in respect to tht vacant bishopric is certain to take place the forthcoming Synod session, it -mg anticipated that several nomina* ions will come forward. The name ol each candidate will require to be proposed by a clergyman and seconded bv a layman.
Inquiries likely to be made probably in England as well as in New Zealand —in connection with suitable candidates, will be directed through * special . committee which has the authority of Synod to act in this capacity.
