Director School Hygiene
ADDRESS TO WOMEN’S CLUB The first meeting of the year of the Manawatu Women’s Club was held yesterday' afternoon in Collinson and Cunninghame’s Club Room, Mrs. A. E. Mansford presiding over a large attendance. The tea-tables looked inviting with vases of pastel-shaded cactus dahlias and green and lemon napkins. The speaker for the afternoon*-was Dr. Elizabeth Gunn,, director of school hygiene, who spoke on f 1 General Health and Nutrition’’ and was listened to with great attention. Dr. Gunn was introduced by Mrs. H. B. Free, who congratulated the speaker upon her recent appointment as director of school hygiene. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn commenced her lecture by saying that to come back to Palmerston North seemed like coming back home, and she felt very honoured that they had asked her to come from Wellington. Our chances of long life were better, except for accidents, and if only we applied the findings of science to our daily life instead of listening to cranks—especially food cranks —we might add many years more—and much more comfortable ones. The directions were so simple: Eat more protective foods—-milk and its products, vegetables, fruits and meat—all produced in New Zealand better than anywheie in the world. People talked most mysteriously of vitamins. They were essential to our diet, for lack of them caused bone disease, nervous disease and nutritional disease, said the speaker, who gave a list of foods for daily diet which supply all the necessary vitamins, such as meat, fish, liver, brains, sardines, milk, cream, butter, cheesei, oysters, yoke of egg, cod-liver oil—remembering that both Olive :pil, and white pf egg has- little if any. vitamins.
