Matthews’ Good Mile
NAPIER, Feb. 24. From Our Own CorresnonUent. An athletic programme of more than usual Interest was presented at McLean Park, Napier, last night to a packed stand with a ground lined with spectators, making up the biggest attendance at a Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club meet this season. ' C. Matthews, British Empire champion over three miles and six miles, took part and won the mile on a slow track in 4min. 25 l-ssec—only 1 1-5 sec outside the record for the track. Frank Sharpley, well-known Hawke's Bay athlete, also Just back from the Empire Games, won the 120 yards hurdles In 15 l-ssecs., and lan Driscoll, New Zealand champion walker, had track conditions and that alone to thank for failure to break the Dominion record for the mile. As it was he walked home a winner in 6min. 29 1-5 secs—only 2sec outside the New Zea-i land figure,
