CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN PALMERSTON NORTH Per Press Association. NELSON, Last Night. The conference of the New Zealand Library Association this afternoon elected tho following officers: —Patron, lion. P. Fraser; president, Mr. T. l). 11. Hall (Wellington); vice-presidents, Miss E. A. Chaysliu (Christchurch), Dr. G. H. »ScholcfiQ]d (Wellington), Messrs. E. J. Bell (Christchurch), J. Barr (Auckland), W. J. Gaudiu (Wellington); council, Miss A. M. Blackett (Wanganui), Messrs. C. W. Collins (Canterbury University College), A. G. W. Duimiughum (Dunedin), C. R. >i. Taylor (Alexander Turnbull Library), G. T. Alley (Country Library bervice), E. B. Ellerm (Leys Institute, Auckland), W. C. Prosser (Rangiora) and J. W. Harris (Otago University); hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Norrie; assistant hon. secretary, Mr. H. Perry; hon. editor, N.Z. Library, Mr. S. Perry. The conference endorsed a resolution of the seminar that, having heard accounts of the free library service as carried out in Timaru and Rangiora and from a knowledge of the system as used in Dunedin, it is thoroughly convinced that community-supported libraries open to all members of tho public free of charge and giving freo lending services are the logical solution of New Zealand's library problem.
A resolution was passed expressing appreciation of the interest the Government has taken in the library movement, particularly its decision to further work in rural areas.
An invitation from Palmerston North to hold the conference there next year was accepted. Mr. John Barr, of Auckland, was admitted to life membership.
