Band Contest
The hymn test which is set down for competition at the Showgrounds on Monday evening next at 7 p.m., will be contested by eighteen bands, each playing its own selection. Many of the most beautiful pieces of our music are included in the selections made and the mellow, organ-like tones of the band do ample justice to the harmonious “Abide With Me,” “Nearer My God to Thee,”
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” and other well-known and attractive pieces.
In the event of inclement weather the test will be held at the Opera House. Admission is to be the low price of Is and no extra is to be charged for the grandstand.
Mr. G. P. Kerry, musical adjudicator, is well known as conductor of the Randwiek Municipal Band, and his fearless criticism and outspoken comments are features of his judgments. The street march which is to be held on Monday from the Square commences at 2 p.m. and promises to be most spectacular as the 18 bands will march at three minutes intervals from the rotunda to the Showgrounds. His Worship the Mayor will welcome the bands on behalf of the city and Mr. J. Hudgens, M.P., and Mr. E. Palliser will also speak. A fine sports programme by the members of the inter-house sports clubs will be given and a number of novelty items will be supplied by band members.
On Saturday, 2Gth inst., the military quickstep will be staged and the box plan for reservation of seats for this event opens at Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghame's on Monday morning. Season tickets (at a cost of 7s Gd each) are now available from Messrs. Goldfinch and Cousins', W. M. Crystall, New Zealand Importing Coy., and Collinson and Cunninghame.
