From Our Own Correspondent. Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show. A meeting'of the management committee was held on Monday evening, Mrs A. J. Will presiding. It was decided to hold the autumn show on Wednesday, March 2, and the schedule was then revised and several classes added. Messrs Shailer, Just £.nd Williamson are to judge the cut flowern, fruits and vegetables, and farm roots, rtspectively, Mrs Turner the domestic classes, Mrs Galland the decorative and Miss Matthews the art and fancy work section. The produce stall this year will be in charge of Mesdames C. W. Davison and A. Pedley; luncheon, Mesdames Bower and A. Burgess, with the Misse* A. Fraser and L. Fieldhouse as assistants Afternoon tea will be supervised by Mesdames Fieldhc use, Yarrall and Gordon. Stewards were appointed as follow: Cut flowers, Mesdames Yarrall and A. Pedley; decorative section, Mrs Collins; fruit and vegetables, Messrs Thompson and A. Pedley; farm produce, Mr H. Rowe; domestic, Mrs Sandercock; fancy work. Misses M. Arnott and M. Will. Schedules will be out within a day or two and intending competitors who desire copies may receive same from the secretary, Mr R. Gfoyn, or the president, Mrs A. J. Will. School Root Crops. Mr E. H. Lange, instructor in agriculture to the Wanganui Education Board, visited the local school to judge the pupils’ individual plots. As there were still several months of growth to be expected, he explained that it was chiefly cultivation of the plcts in which he was interested, and expressed himself well satisfied with the work done by the pupils. While at the school Mr Lange took the opportunity of presenting the awards won by local scholars in the recent calf rearing competition. Handsome books were presented to Rona Hill and Ken Mossop, who came equal first, and certificates to Helen Parker and Cliff Fieldhouse, equal ■ third. Personal. Mr Arthur Jessop is visiting relatives in Bulls. Mr and Mrs Ron Aird left on Monday on a motoring tour to Cambridge and Auckland. Mr James Aird has returned from a visit to Auckland. Tennis. The final of the local club’s combined doubles handicap, which was played on Tuesday, resulted in a win for Mr A. C. and Miss J. Eades over their opponents, Mr R. Morrison and Miss J. Caverhill. This tournament has been closely contested throughout, and the final game proved no exception. Intending competitors are reminded that entries for the Hunt Rose Bowl, Morcom Cup and both Scott Cups, must be made by the 20th of this month. Rich Man : "There's no sense in teaching the boy to count over 100. He can hire accountants to do his book-keeping. ,;l Tutor : "Yen, but he'll want to play his own game of golf, won't he,?"
