HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD MEETS Mr. M. H. Oram presided at a meeting 6f the Palmerston North High Schools Board of Governors last evening. Also present were Messrs. A. A. Langley, A. J. Graham, G. Tremaine, f. D. Lynch, J. A. Ntish, Col. J. H. Whyte and Mrs. Aitchison. The principal of the Technical High School, Mr. H. M. Scott, reported a record enrolment for the day school. There 261 first-year students, 127 second-year pupils, 83 seniors and four paying students. The totals were 244 boys and 271 girls. The position with regard to accommodation remained a very pressing one, particularly for classes doing general or commercial work. He had acted on the suggestion of the Education department to vary the .usual timetable during hot weatner. Swimming, and life-saving were receiving special attention. The report of the rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr. J. Murray) revealed a roll of 376 consisting of 256 old pupils and 120 new ones. During the last week of 'last term, 25 boys learned to swim and during the past week, extra swiiaming periods had been indulged in. During the hou~~ys five masters and 11 boys of the cadet company attended the training camp at Trentham. The principal of the Girls’ High School, Miss E. E. Stephens, reported a roll of 90 new pupils and 187 old pupils —total 277 —which recovered the heavy losses in numbers that took place during 1937 but without any substantial increase in last year’s initial numbers. The Department he,d sanctioned another relieving teacher to bring tho staff up to the number required for 275 pupils. Miss Daniell had been appointed to the position. Miss Griffiths had gone to her new position in Otago and she was at present trying to find her successor. The principal reported a shortage of adequate furniture. Tho grounds were in excellent order and the school building fresh and clea.n. The chairman reported that work on the assembly hall and outbuildings at the Girls’ High School, was progressing satisfactorily. Renovations at the Boys’ High School. had been completed. Plans had been completed for additions and renovations to tho hostel at the Boys’ High School. Mr. Oram paid tri bute to the services rendered by Mr. Hodge, architect to the Wanganui Education Board, to the Palmerston North High Schools and expressed tho hope that he would be speedily restored to health. Miss C. 11. Slyfield had been appointed home s jience teacher at the Girls’ High School. The use of the Technical School was granted the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for the annual gathering of farmers’ daughters to be held in Palmerston No -th in May. The Girl Guides’ Association was granted the use c £ the baths at the Girls’ High School!. The rector and staff % of the Boys’ High School were congratulated on the successful examination results which were reported as comparing more than favourably with other schools. Two passed the Junior University Scholarship examination with credit, three secured University bursaries, 44 university entrance, 43 the school certificate, nine a partial certificate, seven Training College entrance, two partial Training College entrance, nine Public Service entrance, 23 the higher leaving ' certificate and 87 senior free places.
