Patron Saint of Love
ST. VALENTINE’S DAY. Yesterday saw the revival in New Zealand of an age-old custom—the exchanging of valentines. After being forgotten for nearly half a century, St. Valentine ’s Day has been enthusiastically celebrated in England and the United States for. the last six years. More recently it was reeintroduced into Australia. St. Valentine’s Day was instituted in memory of a saint of the first century, believed to be the patron saint of friendship and love. Time hhs changed considerably the type of token of friendship exchanged. Gone are tne old sentimental poems and letters similar to the one we find Sam Weller [arduously trying to compose, and their place is taken by some useful gift or appropriate card. Indeed, St. Valentine’s Day in some centres has almost broadened into a lesser Christmas.
