Hon. H. A. Russell, M.L.C., of Little Flaxmere, Hawke’s Bay, is leaving Auckland on January 26 by the Awatea on a holiday visit to Australia. Ho will join the Ormonde at Melbourne for Perth.

Sir Hughe Kaatchbull-Huggeßsen, former British Ambassador to China, arrived in England at the week-end. Sir Hughe was severely wounded last August in an attack by Japanese planes.-*-Official Wireless.

Dr. J. M. Valentine, who has been visiting New Zealand for the past six weeks on a research fellowship of Yale University and the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, returned to Honolulu by the Maripcsa yesterday, accompanied by Mrs. Valentine.

Mr. A. I. E. Jones arrived by the Awatea from Sydney to take over the duties of assistant inspector for New Zealand of tho Bank of New South Wales. Mr. Jones, who is accompanied by Mrs. Jones, is a New Zealander. He was until recently chief accountant in Sydney. Mr. David Smith, Receiver of Land Revenue and Deputy Commissioner of Crown Lands, formerly of Wellington, was wished farewell at the North Auckland Lands Office this week by members of the staff and by the North Auckland Laud Board, on the eve of his retirement after 44 years’ service. Mr. M. R. Hodder, sou of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Hodder, of Alan street, has returned to Palmerston North after a month’s visit to Sydney where, with others from New Zealand, he met representatives of the Oxford Group in the Australian States. Mr. Hodder intends to return to Sydney in a mouth or so to rejoin* Mrs. Hodder. Mr. George Lansbruy, former leader of tho British Parliamentary Labour Party, who has beeu visiting European countries iu recent months on a peace mission, has received invitations from leading statesmen iu Hungary, Rumania and Yugoslavia to visit those countries. After 40 years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. Edward N. Pascoe, postmaster at Te Awamutu since April, 1931, has retired on superannuation. Mr. Pascoe started his service at Napier and then went to Wellington, later-nerving on the staff at Te Ivopuru (Northern Wairoa), Feilding, Palmerston North, Napier and again at Wellington, where he remained for 14 years. His iirst appointment as postmaster was at Newmarket in 1919, and afterwards he had charge at Ngaruawahia, Otorohanga, Newton and lastly, Te Awamutu.
