Jubilee Celebrations
NOVELTIES INTRODUCED A most attractive programme of spectacular and thrilling events has been arranged by the organiser (Mr. H. E. Bennett) of the Jubilee celebration? for Palmerston North’s big carnival week, to commence on Saturday, November 20, and conclude on the following Saturday. Various new outdoor attractions will bo presented and those citizens who have a proper civic pride, are requested to write away to old Palmerstonians and others to be their guests over this gala week, to show them just how gay tho city can become, and what a really fine city we have grown into in the 60 years of our existence. It is too early to predict at this juncture, but indications point to the procession of 1937 being even more spectacular and bigger than the big parade of ten years ago. Palmerston North has entered nobly into the spirit, of the occasion and the committee reports that it has organised one of the best carnival programmes ever present ed in New Zealand. Tho Maori cavai cade will be on a vast scale, taking over five hours in all to complete. This will take tho form of an afternoon performance, depicting Maori lifo from the first migratory canoe, the arrival of the first missionary, Rev. Samuel Marsden, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, a mock Maori battle with its attendant hakas and traditions, Maori life at a model pa with its poi songs and dances, mat-weaving, carving and tattooing, etc., while tho evening entertainment will bring the modern Maori into the picture with many spectacles and the best of Maori talent to sing the newest of Maori melodies. Native dress will be worn by every performer and the Showgrounds will be transformed for the occasion into a model Maori pa. The whole week will be occupied in pageant and entertainment with a special day for the children at which some most spectacular tableaux will be presented by tho massed children of all schools. An old identities' day is also organised for those elderly folk who were residents of the borough 50 years ago or more, so everyone, ypung and old, will have something to look forward to and remember all their lives. Let all citizens enter into the spirit of the Jubilee, and assist the organiser and the committee in making our Diamond Jubilee celebrations one of the best events of its kind ever seen in the Dominion.
