FLYING AT EIGHTY

“Not the Slightest * Bit Scared,” Says the Lady PEEP AT HOME FROM AIR From Our Own Correspondent. HASTINGS, July 16.

One of Hawke’s Bay’s early pioneers, Mrs. W. Guthrie, of Havelock North, was afforded the opportunity yesterday afternoon of viewing her adopted province and homestead from a new angle —from a ’plane. The flight was made in the latest importation in aircraft, the Miles Whitney Straight monoplane. Mrs. Guthrie, who is over 80 years of age, thoroughly enjoyed this, her first flight. She was taken for a joy-ride of over a quarter of an hour by Mr. 11. Edwards, of Wellington, who was visiting the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast, Aero Club’s ’drome at Bridge Pa. “It was just wonderful, and I enjoyed every minute of it,” she said after her return to land. Sho was all smiles, and there was a merry twinkle in her eyes as she alighted from tho hand-somely-appointed cabin. “But weren’t you scared!” asked a friend.

“Not the slightest bit,” declared Mrs. Guthrio with a scornful shake of her head that plainly indicated that none of these modern fanglcd things could scare one who had known all manner of risks in the good old pioneering days. With a graceful “Thank you” to the pilot Mrs. Guthrie proceeded to her car and was heard to inform her intimate friends that though this was her first flight it certainly was not going to be her last if she could help it.
