Pious Boy Gangster
HE TAUGHT IN SUNDAY SCHOOL Because he had incurred heavy gambling debts Sunday school teacher Leslie Holt, aged 17, clerk of Birkenshaw, Bradford, England, turned gangster. With a handkerchief tied over the lower part of his face Holt entered the Morley street sub-post office at Bradford. He produced a pistol and commanded the astonished staff to ‘‘stick-em-up. " Mr John Atkinson, who assisted his sisters in the business, closed with Holt and tried to take the pistol from him. Holt struck them on the head with the butt of the weapon and ran out. These facts were related at Leeds Assizes, when Holt was sent to Durham Boys' Prison for nine months. Tribute to a enthusiasm shown by Holt as a Sunday school teacher was paid by Rev. J. Burton, of Bradford, who said the youth must have been overwhelmed by fear and panic because of his gambling losses.
