Crawford (Australia) met E. D. i Andrews (N.Z.) who has the reputation of a lion killer. Crawford, in his usual I unhurried style, settled down to a long- | driving battle. The second set was o ! great baseline duel, interspersed with ! volleying. There were seven deuces in j the thirteenth game. Andrews lost | form in this set and Crawford took the • third easily. V. B. McGrath (Austra- | lia), in his early games against D. C. Coombe (N.Z.), had pleasant practice. He slacked off in the third set, however, and Coombe took advantage of this by increasing his speed and playing vigorously. lie won well and deserved his win. J. H. Bromwich (Australia) opened confidently against V. G. Kirby (South Africa). Ho won the first set by accurate driving. He slipped twice on the greasy court in the second but tincreased liis pace in the third and fourth sets and forced Kirby into errors. C.
