Working for New Assembly Hall

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS’ PARENTS Mr J. A. Grant was in the chair wheu the Palmerston North Girls' High School Parents' Association held it* annual meeting on Wednesday. The report -of the chairman, which was adopted, stated:—May I first pay a tribute to the way in which the members of the association have worked and given in the interests of tho school. There appears to bo some misunderstanding or doubt as to the constitution of the asspeiation, but this would very soon ho dispelled if tho parents of all the girls attending and receiving the bhne-fits of the school would come to the meetings of the association. Tho association is purely n voluntary one to further tho interests of the Girls’ High School and the scholars. Quite apart from any money raised or assistance given to the school, the association would justify its existence if its only objoctivo were to keep contact between tho parents and tho staff. For that reason, 1 do hope tnat some means can bo found of bringing all tho parents into tho association. At our last annual meeting we said gooa* bye to Mrs Rhodes. Shortly afterwards we met Miss Stephens and her now staff, when opportunity was taken to oxtend a welcome to Miss Stephens and i to the newer members of the staff, to exchange ideas as to ways and means of assisting the school, and to be spurred into activity by an enthusiastic and encouraging talk by our newtyarrived headmistress. The gala was most successful, and thanks to the many willing and hard workers, to tho stuff and the girls, and to tho large number who attended, we raised £B6 10s, which will be another most helpful contribution to tho assembly hall." The financial statement snowed that the association had started the year with £267 17s 7d in hand, and £250 bad been paid to the board of governors *or the assembly hall fund. Tho sum m hand at the end of the year was £llO 14s 7d. It was decided that a further £75 bo paid to the board of governors for l&c assembly hall fund. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr G. 11. Mewott; secretary, Mr H. W. Mullancy; treasurer, Mr H. F. WilsOn; auditor, Mr \V Hunter; committee, 36 members wero

I appointed. | Votes of thanks were passed to Mr I Hunter for his services as auditor and for the use of his fooms; Mr J. Johns, J for services rendered; tho retiring ’chairman (Mr Grant) and the retiring secretary (Mr C. J. Ball), and to the , donors for trophies and prizes for the garden party. It was resolved to donate £1 Is to the funds of the Garrison band and a vote of thanks was passed tv them for the service they rendered at the gala day. Colonel J. H. Whyte reported that the , board of governors intended to apply for a subsidy of £2OOO for tho erection of an assembly hall, tho estimated cost of which is £3OOO. Colonel Whyte said £6OO was in hand, and it would be ne- ( cessary for another £4OO to be found. { Tho headmistress (Miss Stephens) intimated that the sports subscription was | in reality a misnomer, it being a purely , voluntary contribution for the provision of sports material for which subsidies | are not granted. Miss Stephens said that the reason for her having brought the subject up was because of an impression existing amongst parents that ’ they had to dip into their pockets for everything. The speaker stated that shortly before her appointment to the school £IOO had, in some manner, been saved from he incidental expenses fund and had been donated to the assembly hall fund. Another matter at which parents were prone to look askance was 1 the periodical cost of 4s lid for a ( school tie Ties had not been a compulsory pari of the uniform for some considerable time.
