Young Girl Killed In Crossing Smash

TRAIN CRASHES INTO REAR OF CAR Per Press Association. TAUMARUNUI, May 3. A girl was killed, and her parents were injured when the car in which they were occupants collided with a train at a level crossing about half a mile from the Owhango railway station The victims were:— Killed Zoan Hitchens, aged 10 years. Injured Mr. Albon Edward Hitchens, aged 40, busliman, of Owhango; abrasions to the head and injuries to the left shoulder; condition not serious. Mrs. Phyllis Whitford Hitchens, aged 34, injuries to the left arm and head; condition not serious. The car was almost ovor the crossing when tho collision occurred, The back portion of the vehicle receiving the full force of the impact. The car was swung to its side, tho child being thrown on to the road and Mr. and Mrs. Hitchens being imprisoned within. Axes had to be employed to cut away tho bodywork before they could be released. Mr. and Mrs. Hitchens and their daughter were conveyed to tho Taumarunui Hospital, where tho child died two hours after admission. She had severe head injuries and a fractured left leg.
