Thames Trots

MEETING SUCCESSFUL DESPITE SHOWERY WEATHER TOTALISATOR UP £7211 (Special to "Times.”) THAMES, Last Night. In spite of showery conditions the Thames Trotting Club held a very successful meeting to-day, the totalisator showing an increase of £7211. The racing was clean and good and the only inquiry was held into the win of Transfer in the Puriri Handicap, when F. J. Smith, who was second, alleged that the winner was led off the mark. The protest was dismissed. M. Steward had a good day with three wins. Bold Venture, each way favourite, was always well placed and won the Hikutaia Handicap after a good tussle with Gloster and Sandusky. Ori Bingen led out from the no. 1 position but at the back he was headed by Bold Venture and Nerihana. Gloster and Sandusky moved in at the turn but Bold Venture, hard driven, scored narrowly. Gloster was always handy but the two-year-old, Sandusky,'who was slow away, put up a fine effort to be close up third at the end, just ahead of Nerihana. All Special, who had not won a race since 1930, scored decisively from Querida iu th© Parawai Handicap, bne was patiently handled by G. T. Mitchell who did not get uneasy when Sophy Bingen was 20 lengths ahead of her at the stands. All Special -caught the leader at the back where Querida and Lady Bunker joined issue and Heather Glow put in a fast run. Querida challenged All Special in the run home but could not reach her, while the little fancied Heather Glow was third with Lady Bunker next.

Driven carefully by F. J. Smith, Musketeer got up to shade Bedford at the finish of the Turua Bracelet Handicap. Hearsay led to the turn from Bedford, Claudelands, Musketeer, Sir Frank and Lucky Love. Bedford headed the leader but Musketeer finished very solidly to score narrowly. Musketeer showed an appreciable return to his December form and he Tan on with fine courage. went a fine race and is maintaining his consistent record. Hearsay had every chance but could not hang on, while Lucky Love and Sir Frank both ran sound races.

The each way favourite, Our Peggy, after being handily placed for a mile and three-quarters in the Thames Trotting Cup, stopped badly to finish a long way back. Great Jewel, who was just in front at the turn, broke and lost his position but came again with a fine finishing effort to win going away. Lady Amanda was the early leader but there was no pace on, the mile taking 2.28 3-5, and the mile and a-half 3.43. Great Jewel, Imposter, Great Chum, Compass and Our Peggy increased the speed over th© last section, Great Jewel winning well while Imposter just shaded Compass, who was a head in front of Great Chum.

Going early into the lead, Transfer won the Puriri Handicap at a surprisingly fine price considering his Wanganui and Hawera displays. He waa confidently handled by M. Stewart, the Canterbury reinsman, who has been so successful with Red Flush. Grattan Girl, a mare in F. *J. Smith’3 stable, was the only one to .make any effort with the winner in the run home but she could not reach Transfer. Gloster beat the tiring Nerihana for third with the rest a long way back. Although she was driven wide out all the way, Waskasu, after waiting on Lady Bunker to the home turn, came away to score an easy win in the President’s Handicap. She made a couple of mistakes but lost very little ground and -was the only one who could run on at the end. She paid close on double figures on the win machine. Lady Bunker attempted to win all the way but was in difficulties at the distance. Querida, who was an each way fancy, made several breaks and was a moderate third with Worthy Lu a poor fourth.

Penalised 24 yards for his earlier success, Transfer completed a double by winning the Kerepchi Handicap easily. He gave some trouble at the start but «:ot away well to take the lead from Our Summer entering the back stretch and he was never in danger of being defeated. Lucky Love was early in second place but could not hang on and Sir Frank cut him out of second place. Our Summer was next followed by Musketeer, who was penalised 48 yards for his previous success.

Going early to the lead, Transwortliy, nicely handled by M. Stewart, won the Kopu Handicap in a good finish. Great Chum made a determined effort to overhaul the leader but failed, while Spessiva, who showed some of her former dash, was third with General Sarsfield next. Nawton Parrish, an each-way favourite, was well placed to the turn, but faded out in the run home. Results:—
