Costs and Rents Of Workers’ Homes
MR. J. A. LEE GIVES STATEMENT Speaking to a large gathering at Auckland on Wednesday evening of persons interested in the housing scheme, th© Under-Secretary of Housing, Mr J. A. Lee, said that the scheme was being conducted on sound business lines. Mi; Lee added that lie therefore could not divulge the exact figures of present contracts or of the probable rents. He could say, however, that some houses at Lower Hutl wer© costing 19/8 a foot, and others a little more or lees. Th© highest cost of a house—it would be thoroughly modern was about £I3OO and the lowest £BSO. The cost would be higher at Orakei where acute slopes necessitated more foundations. H© could say that the weekly rent would represent about one day’s wages for a good carpenter, or perhaps a little more. Rents would not be based on high interest. There would be a maintenance department and good tenants would get a rebate in rent and the tenant who neglected his house would suffer. Special legislation would deal with, the tenant who, although in a position to do so, failed to pay his rent. Mr Lee said tenants would not be restricted to those with salaries of not over £6 a week, and the necessary alteration would be made to the legislation. They wished to make it possible for any worker to have a house.

Cox put in another fine dash to outstrip the Celts and run round for Hutchinson to have an easy conversion, making the final count 16—10. For Old Boys G. Cox, Bradley and W. Clothier were the best players and Simon, Pullen and Tomoana for Celtic. Mr. A. McGlashan refereed. Results of Other Games.
