Palmerston North Hospital Board

MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of tho Palmers- ■ ton North Hospital Board was held yesterday, Air. J. A. Nash (actingchairman) presiding. Also present were Airs. AI. Aitchison and Alessrs. A. E. Alansford, G. P. Catley, M. A. Aloody, D. Collis, L. T. AlcLean, J. Hodgens, M.P., V. E. Smith, G. A. Alonk, W. Howell, J. Boyce, T. Green. Leave of absence was granted Mr. F. J. Ryder. The Nurses and Midwives Registration Board advised that it was prepared to grant approval to the Otaki Hospital as a training school for maternity nurses subject to certain conditions.— The conditions were agreed to. The medical superintendent (Mr. J. H. North) reported that there were 168 patients in the hospital on January 31, and 191 on February 28. Tho daily I number of occupied beds was 185.46. i There had been 12 admissions to the maternity homo during February, and 10 births. J The matron (Miss J. N. AlcGhie) reported that the health of the staff was good. Nurse Riordan had resigned to take up a position in Auckland. Sister Horn commenced duty in charge of the operating theatro on Alarch 8. The following donations had been received: Mrs. AlcCaskill, children's books; Joe and Margaret Wilson, books; Mrs. L. E. Bale, books. The medical superintendent at the Otaki Sanatorium reported that there were 56 patients in the institution on February 1, and the same number at the end of the month. The matron at the Awapuni Home

reported that there were 54 inmates in the institution on February 28, with three admissions, one discharge and two deaths during Alarch. Books and periodicals had been sent in by Mrs. Schward, Airs. Kirk and Airs. Newman, and clothes by Mrs. Petty. The Congregational Women’s Guild had visited the home and given an entertainment and donated cakes and fruit. Managing-Secretary ’ s Report. The managing-secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) presented the following report for February:— Additions to Southern Ward: This work is progressing satisfactorily and is now nearing completion. Alterations at McHardy Ward: This work has been undertaken by our own staff, and good progress is being made. Re-rooiing, etc., at X-ray Department: A commencement has been made on this work. Painting work; One painter is now engaged on interior renovations at the Maternity Home, and two painters are working on interior renovation of the old portion of the Awapuni Home building. New electric mains: The cable for the underground main for the hospital having arrived from England, the Council’s staff is at present engaged on laying this cable. The main is of a capacity large enough to carry twice our present electrical demand. It wili be remembered that a new switchboard, with new control gear for our installation, was installed last year in preparation for this work and tho new main is being brought to this switch-board. Paths and roadways: Following on the completion of work around the administration block, maintenance work on the tarred paths and roadways on the northern side of the building is proceeding.

Returning thanks to the Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild for the flowers sont to her while iu hospital, Airs R. A. Fuller said they had arrived at a time when they wero most appreciated. The writer conveyed good wishes for the annual meeting and for tho coming year offering her congratulations on the good work the guild was quietly doing. Alembers were glad to learn that Mrs Fuller expected to return to her home at tho week-end.
