Euchre Evening at Makino
At the end of a euchre evening held recently at Makino Mr. W. P. Bickers (president of the hall committee), on behalf of the members, made a small i presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Drummond McGregor. This, Mr. Bickers said, was in appreciation of their consistent patronage of the regular card tournaments and .help with all social functions in aid of hall funds. Musical ! honours were then given for this popular young couple. In returning thanks for his wife and himself, Mr. McGregor remarked that although they were leaving Makino they would not be far away and hoped ; often to have the pleasure of participating in the euchre tournaments. On this occasion Mrs. P. R. Simpson donated the men’s prizes, the first being won by M. W. E. Hills and the sealed by Mr. P. Apel. The ladies’ were anonomously given and were carried off by Miss Lottie Baker (first) an‘d Mrs. J. Amer (sealed). On Saturday last Mrl and Mrs. Don- ; elly, who after two years’ residence in] Makino aro leaving this week to live at Opunake, were given a farewoll evening by the members of the school committee and settlers of Makino Road. There was dancing, and cards for those who preferred a more leisurely form of amusement, so that everyone was thoroughly well entertained. Messrs Hansen and Pring, of Kimbolton and Apiti respectively, were the musicians, Mrs. P. R. Simpson played for extra dances and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr. T. Shalders. The euchre prizos were given by MesdameS J. Pearson and E. Mitchell and were won by Mrs. J. Amer and Mr. P. Petersen who carried of the firsts, and
Airs. Alalone and Mr. E. Jearson who gained the sealed. The wihners of a Monte Carlo waltz were Miss Vera Petersen and Air. H. Nairn and the prizes were donated by Mrs. A. H. Lang. A generous supper was supplied by the school committee ladies and the table decorations were charmingly carried out with asters. During the evening little Betty Green was warmly applauded for a very well executed tap dance. Before supper small Fay Sandbrook handed Airs. Donelly a delightful bouquet made by little Atiss Joy Simms anu later Mrs. A. H. Laing (secretary of the school committee), on behalf of the gathering, presented the guests of honour with an oak dining room clock for which Air. Donelly suitably returned thanks. In the course of his speech. Mr. Laing expressed regret at the local school’s having been taken into the consolidation area and the prospect of its being closed but the matter, he stated, was entirely out of the hands of the committee. A very pleasant evening concluded with the singing of 11 Auld Lang Syne. ’ ’
