Bowling in Feilding

SMITHERS CUP WON BY OROUA CLUH At Feilding on Saturday, in perfect weather conditions, the two local bowling clubs met in a contest lor the Smithers Cup which was held l»y the Feilding Bowling Club. The challenge was issued by the Oroua Club and rinks from each club played at home and away, the result being a win for the challengers.

The skips and scores of the several rinks are as follow (Oroua skips being mentioned first): —

•On the Feilding Club’s green: Roach 18 v. Ncilson 23; Jarrett 22 v. Moore 24; Hewat 21 v. Nesbit 18; Shrimpton 18 v. Williamson 33. On the Oroua Club’s green: Stewart 15 v. Davidson 18; Simpson 23 v. Ramsay 13; Pitman IS v. Way 14; Aitken 28 v. White 13.

Oroua 163; Feilding 156. At the conclusion of the games at the Oroua Club’s green, Mr. A. G. Murch, on behalf of the Feilding Club, congratulated the Oroua Club on their victory and also upon the excellent condition of their green which he said had improved remarkably during the past 12 months. Continuing, he said that thi Feilding Club bowlers had thoroughly enjoyed their match, and thanked the ladies for their hospitality in providing afternoon tea. He then called for three cheers for the victors.

At the Feilding Club’s green, Mr. C. M. Sargxsson, president of the Feilding Bowling Club, handed over the Smithers Cup to Mr. C. 11ausmann, president of the Oroua Bowling Club, and said that while it gave him pleasure to return the trophy his club was sorry to lose it. However, he trusted that there would bo many moro matches for the Smithers Cup and in a battle royal which he hoped would be staged next season his club was hopeful of winning back the trophy. Mr. Hausmann, replying, thanked Mr. Sargisson for his remarks and said that the Oroua Club did not mind looking after the Smithers Cup during the winter months and intimated that his club would not readily relinquish possession of it. The Smithers Cup was an excellent one and very worthy of competition, he added. His rinks had thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon’s bowling and looked forward to a continuance of the friendship and sportsmanship revealed by the Feilding Club’s bowlers.
