MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEE’S DISPUTE OVER BUILDING PERMIT. Present at a meeting of the Palmerston North City Council last evening were the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, and Crs. J. Hodgens, M.P., W. B. Cameron, W. B. Tennent, J. T. J. Heatley, G. Tremaine, J. J. Stevenson, W. H. Mouldey. The Palmerston North Free Ambulance was granted permission to sell raffle tickets in the streets from March 16 to 19. Mr P. V. Burns, an employee of the Council in tho Electrical Department, waited on the council asking an explanation and a solution of a dispute which had arisen between himself and the building inspector. Mr Burns claimed that he had a permit for all building done, whereas it was alleged against him that he had infringed the building by-laws. The matter was ventilated last night in the presence of the building inspector.
It was decided to rescind a previous motion, and to permit Mr Burns to live in his present temporary premises for a further six months, in view of the extraordinary circumstances. Messrs Cooper, llapley and Rutherfurd applied on behalf of Mr A. H. White, for permission to erect a building on a narrow strip of land situated at the corner of Victoria avenue and Dahlia street. It was decided that the previous decision of the council based on the legal advice of the city solicitors that the council could refuse to grant a permit to erect a building on the land concerned, be re-affirmed. The Automobile Association (Manawatu), had requested tho planting of suitable quick-growing trees to provide shelter at the camp site, and it was resolved to inform the association that some shelter trees have been planted and additional trees will bo planted during the coming winter. The application of Willard Home for an increased subsidy was referred to next year's estimates. The Takaro Progressive Association is to be advised that the matter of filling in the open drain in Botanical road between Chelwood street and tho bridge will receive consideration when the estimates for the ensuing yc#.r are under discussion.
The works committee reported that the joint report of the health and building inspectors had been received and referred back for further information as to whether Mr Hopwood is complying with by-law No. 10, and whether he is letting separate rooms or conducting a boarding house. Smoke Houses In City.
The sanitary inspector submitted a list of smoke-houses now in uso within the city, and it was decided that inquiries be made from Wellington, Wanganui, Napier, Hamilton, and Auckland as to what ia the council's policy in regard to smoke-houses in tho business area of the city, and that Mr S. Andrews' application for permission to erect a smoke-house in Church street west, be held over pending receipt of such, information.
