Control of Sports Grounds by Sports Clubs
CITY COUNCIL DELAYS TRANSFER FOR ONE YEAR. The control of two of the recreation grounds in the city was the subject of the following motion confirmed by the City Council last evening:— “ That the resolution passed on'May 25, 1936, that the Takaro and Manawatu Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Clubs be advised that the council requires such clubs to assume control of the respective grounds occupied by them, as from October 1, 1937, be amended by deleting “October 1, 1937," and substituting “October 1, 1935." More Courts at North Street. It was decided that the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club bo advised that the council is prepared to advance a sum not exceeding £250 on the construction of two hard tennis courts as requested by the club, conditional upon the club agreeing to refund the amount of the advance by ten equal half-yearly payments commencing on September 30, 1937, the work to be carried out and completed to the satisfaction of the city engineer and curator. Athletic Club’s Request. The Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club applied for permission to hold w j eekly meetings at North street park and requested permission to mark out a 440 yards cycle track. It was decided to inquire the reason why the club requires the use of the park in preference to the sportsground, where a properly constructed cycle track is available and is in use by the club on Monday and Friday evenings, and would also be available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when not required by the Cricket Association for representative matches. ,
The city curator was requested to report on the general condition of the sportsground and what should be done in order that the ground be kept in better condition.
