A recent caller at a placement office was a marine engineer whose papers show that he was with Scott’s polar expedition in 1902-04, being a member of Evans’ boat crew. They also iuclirded a letter of recommendation from that officer, known throughout the Empire as “Evans of the Broke.” He is now Rear-Admiral Evans, and Broke, which, with the destroyer Swift when on i>atrol duty in the English Channel on the night of April 20tb, 1917, was attacked by six German destroyers. In the sensational sea light that followed the British ships suffered no material damage, but two of Germany’s newest and largest destroyers were sunk, the others disappearing at full speed in the darkness. A Wellington firm, having notified the placement officer that the services of a fireman were required, the polar adventurer, who is over 60 years of age, was strongly recommended for the job. He was appointed, and is said to bo giving complete satisfaction
