MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tho Palmerston North City Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) presiding. Also present were Crs. R. L. C. Aitchison, A. A. Langley, J. J. Stevenson, J. Ilodgens, M.P., W. B. Tcnnent, W. B. Cameron, G. Tremaine, J. T. J. Heatley and W. Mouldey. An application from the residents of Manawaroa street for tar-sealing of the roadway was referred to next year’s estimates. The gas manager (Mr. J. W. Muir* reported an increase of 290,000 cubic feet in the output for January, as compared with the corresponding month ot 1936. During the month the department installed six cookers, ono water heater and four fires. Three services were also laid and six meters connect ed. The total number of consumers was now 5501. As electrical engineer, Mr. Muir reported that the following work was carried out by the lines department during January: Services run 12, meters tested 137, meters installed 118. The inspector made inspections of and passed 55 jobs during the month, including 45 extensions, making the total number of consumers to date G1(57. Tho total connected load, including streets lights, was now 23,435 k.w. The power station returns showed that 1,140,300 units had been purchased and none generated, rex>resenting an increase of 9.5 per cent, over the figure for the corresponding month of 193 G. City Engineer’s Report. Inter alia, the city engineer (Mr. J. R. Hughes) reported as follows on the work done during the month of January:— Street maintenance: Three hundred cubic yards of screened river metal and 120 cubic yards of screened pit metal have been carted and spread on various secondary streets in tho city, and ten cubic yards of asphalt used in patching the paved streets. Tho roadway at the intersection of Albert street and Ferguson street has been topdressed with tar and chips. Several gangs have been employed cleaning out watertables and grass on the sides of the streets. Footpath maintenance: The following footpaths have been reconditioned oy patching where necessary, and toparessed with tar and fine grit: Albert street, Ferguson street to Church street (west side), Ferguson street, Albert street to Victoria avenue (north side), Fitzhcrbert avenue, Ferguson street to College street (east side). General.—Reservoir, Vogel street: The works under the contract have almost been completed. Tho contractors arc trimming up the embankmeuts in readiness for sowing grass seed. Artesian well: The contractor for the sinking of tho Gin. diameter well has driven tho pipes to a depth of 190 feet. Pump house: The work under this contract has been completed and the contractors for the' installation of pumping units in duplicate have commenced to instal the plant. Waterworks.—During tho month eleven new services were installed and nino services overhauled and repaired Sixteen new hydrant surface boxes have been placed on the new 21in. diameter sux>ply main in Fitzhcrbert avenue. A leaking lead joint on the 18m. diameter steel main in Ragitikei street has been recaulked and made sound. Twenty-one-inch diameter supply main: To date the contractors, have laid and jointed a total of 174 chains of 21in. diameter steel mains. The section of the main laid from the Fitzherbert bridge to the valve on Barber's flat is now undergoing pressure tests.
