Steamer Drifting
8.0.5. CALLS RECEIVED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph-—Copyright. BRISBANE, Feb. 13. Several S.O.S. calls have been received from the steamer Shousing (4920 tons), which is believed to be driftiug helplessly with a brokeu rudder in i cyclone, 700 or 800 miles east of Cairns. Several vessels, including the steamers Nellore and China Exporter, are hurrying to the assistance of the Shousing. The Shouzing is bound from Occuu Island to Melbourne carrying a full cargo of phosphates, and has u Chinese crew of 40 and Japanese officers. She is commanded by Captain Kaaalo. The Shousing form erly was known as the Pauline,* the Daylina, the fcitrabasad, and the Bright Vega, and is owned by Japanese interests in C'nina. The present agents for the vessel are the British Phosphute Commission. REPAIRS EFFECTED. The Townsville radio station pickod up a weak radio message from the Shousing this morning saying that temporary repairs effected to the broken rudder cable and the vessel is now heading for the (Queensland coast. Much water has been shipped and the wireless room has been flooded. The ship’s wireless range, therefore, is limited.
