Robertson, secretary of tit’ Palmerston North Squash Rackets Club, has received advice that tho New Zealand championships have been allocated to Palmerston North, and tho tournament will be held on June 12, 13 and 14. <B> <3> <V V Representations are being made by tho City Council to the Commissioner of Transport that there should bo a speed limit of 15 miles an hour through tho Esplanade and over the road from the entrance into the Alilsou aerodrome property to the hangar. <S> «$> <3> For the year 1935-36, 3934 driver’s licenses were issued by the Palmerston North City Council, while for the eight months only of the present year, 4512 have been issued, making an increase of 548 for tho eight months over the total issue for tho previous twelve months. <§> <S> <S> <3> During December, 45,732 passengers were carried in the municipal buses, and iu January, 41,107, the revenue for tho two mouths being £554 5h 4d and £514 2s Od. Tho committee decided that the association bo advised that it was not considered advisable at present to take action along the lines suggested. <3> <s> <B> The structural work in connection with tho new grandstand at the Esplanade has been completed, and the contractors are now proceeding with the erection of internal timber partitions, and building up seats on the stand. The whole of tho work, including plasterer and painter's finish, will, with good weather conditions, bo completed at tho end of February, stated a report presented to the City Council lust night by the city engineer (Mr J. It. Hughes). <B> » * During January 472 rations were issued to 51 cases throughout the Palmerston North Hospital Board's district, as compured with 782 rations to 83 eases during the corresponding month of 1936. In Palmerston North itself 330 rations wero issued to 30 cases, tho comparative figures being 413 and 42 respectively. It was stateJ that so far this financial year ratious had been issued to 2155 cases, as compared with 2204 cases for the corresponding period of last year. It was pointed out that the number of cases was not au index of the amount of poverty in the district, but rather an indication of the amount of sickness, which was the chief cause of distress. <B> <t <B> A request by a timber factory for permission to dump shavings iu the Terraco End gravel pit fell on unsympathetic ears when it came before the City Council Just night. It was stated that tho Railway Department had no objection, but did not desiro anything done that would be objected to by the civic authorities. The Mayor said that residents of Terraco End would have cause for complaint if shavings were dumped in the pit, ivhile the fire menace also could not be disregarded. The council decided that tho request be not granted, but that the writers be advised that thcro was use for tho shavings at the abattoirs.

On Saturday many members of the Kia Toa Football and Cricket Clubs gathered together to farewell one of their most popular members, Mr T. Jordan who has been transferred to Dargaville. Air H. Crawford (Football Club) and Air G. Farrar (on behalf of tho Cricket Club) mado eulogistic references to Mr Jordan’s fine work for the Kia Toa Clubs during the last six years. Both clubs wero losing a member they could ill afford to lose but nevertheless were pleased to know that his transfer meant a promotion in his employment. On behalf of both clubs, Mr Crawford presented Mr Jordan with an illuminated address beariug the signatures of all tho club members, with inscribed pictorial references to most of Air Jordan’s associations with sport in Palmerstin Nortb. Air Jordan, in replying statho felt very much having to sever his connection with the Kia Toa Clubs. His association with them had meant much to him during his residence in Palmerston North, and he would treasure the address as a reminder of them all. Mr and Airs Jordan left for Dargaville on Saturday evening by train, and were accorded musical honours by a gathering of almost one hundred and fifty members of the Kia Toa Clubs and their friends.
