Don’t Let New Zealand Down
SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY NEEDED OVERSEAS. "While overseas I frequently noticed residents of New Zealand writing letters to the papers, in which they deprecated the policios, and sometimes tho practices, of the Dominion," declared Professor W. Riddet, director of tho Dairy Research Institute of Massey College, on his return to Palmerston North yesterday from a trip abroad. "It is a grave mistake," ho declared. "Tho people reading these poxmlar journals aro only too ready to take up theso matters to tho detriment of the Dominion. The subjects raised are often controversial matters, and those of an opposite view who would like to reply often have no opportunity of doing so." There was a great deal of good being done New Zealand by steady advertising of the Dominion's attractions, but even further outlay could bo mado with advantage in this direction. Professor Riddet paid tribute to tho resident New Zealand Trade Commissioners in various countries. Ho made contact with them whenever possible and declared that any New Zealander abroad who failed to do so was losing a good opportunity. These men made many invaluable contacts, and were highly rospected in tho communities where they were established. Whether travelling for pleasure or attempting to obtain an opening in a now quarter, the wise New Zoalander would not forget his trade commissioner. Eighty-five new members were elected at last evening’s meeting of the executive of tho Automobilo Association (Manawatu).
