Mr J. E. Hughes, city engineer, is at present attending tho annual conference of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers at Christchurch. Guests of tho Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday were Messrs. RAnderson (Taihape), W. T. Jaggard ; and R. Grigor (Palmerston North). Professor W. Riddet, Director of the Dairy Research Institute, Massey College, returned to Palmerston North yesterday from his 12 months visit to Great Britain and tho Coutinent. . Mr. C. McMeekan, lecturer in dairy husbandly at Massey Agricultural College, Palmerston North, who is visiting England, is working with Dr. John Hammond, of the School of Agriculture, Cambridge, on carcase quality problems of pork and bacon production. Regret at tho serious illness of Mr. J. K. llornblow, of Poxton, chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, was expressed at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday, and it was decided to write to him voicing the hope that ho would speedily bo restored to health. Mr. H. E. Edmunds advised tho executive of the Automobile Association (Manawatu) last evening that, for health reasons, ho would be unable to attend meetings of the executive. Leave of absence was granted Mr. Edmunds with hopes expressed that he would be speedily returned to good health. Mr. J. A. Nash was appointed yesterday to represent the Palmerston North Hospital Board at. the forthcoming conference of the Hospital Boards' Association at l’imaru, along with Mr. J. H. North (medical superintendent) and Mr. A. J. Phillipps (managing-secre-tary). Prior to leaving for the Wouth Island, where he will take u|> a teaching appointment, Mr A. W. H. Cutler was presented with a travelling rug by Mr A. M. Ongley, on behalf of the members of the executive and players in the Manawatu Cricket Association, as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his services to criekct in the Manawatu. Bov. A. Blakeuiore, the minister of the Cuba Street Methodist Church, loft for Auckland last evening, to attend tho annual conference of tho Methodist Church. Mr A. H. Fisher, the lady delegate, will leave on Wednesday. Also attending the conference will be Bev. A. N. Scotter, B.A. (St. Paul's), Rev. R. E. Fordyce (Sanson-Kongotea), and Rev. J. H. Allen (Feilding). The appointment of Mr S. W. S. Strong, of Greymouth, as iirst engineer iu charge of Dominion mining schemes and operations since the amalgamation under the Eabour Dejiartment, is announced. Mr Strong, who is a sou of Colonel W. J. Strong, C.8.E., Dunedin, was educated at Otago Boys High School, and Otago University School ox Mines, where he graduated in 1y24. Later he was employed patrolling geologist for tho Taranaki oil fields, and had charge of the gold prospecting scheme of the Unemployment Booed oa the West Coast. Air Strong is at present seriously indisposed.—Press Assn.
